I’m Kevin Kenan, and I DJ as Cult of Funk.

At 58, I’ve been making and playing music for five decades, and after the isolation of the pandemic, I finally took my sound to the dance floor.As a DJ, musician, and producer, I’m obsessed with sharing the joy and euphoria of music. My live sets blend genres of house music into seamless open-to-close sessions that turn cold dance floors into sweaty congregations. I’ve cultivated a funky sound built around infectious bass grooves and strong melodic hooks. My shows start with chill, downtempo soulful house, and then work into deep, jazzy house that slowly layers in glittering disco, before peaking with the heavy beats of melodic and progressive bass house.Off the decks, I play traditional instruments like guitar and keyboards, plus more esoteric ones like the Chapman Stick and the Stick Bass. Recently, I’ve been leaning more into the new pad controllers like the Ableton Push, which combine the expressiveness of string instruments with the sound range and precision of electronics.I’m based in Eugene, Oregon, and play a monthly show at Falling Sky Brewing as part of their Friday Beats & Brews series. I also write liner notes for my mixes on Substack, where I talk about what went into the mixes, how I selected the songs, built the progression, and finally performed the mix. I highlight both the elements that I thought worked well and the mistakes I made that bug me (even if no one else notices). These notes include a full tracklist and talk about what being a DJ in my late fifties is like.My Cult of Funk project is about bringing fun and community to packed dance floors. From groovy warm-up sets to peak-time sweat, Cult of Funk fills the floor with good vibes, new friends, and a funky sound that always lands on the one.
